Water, if it is to be considered drinking water, must be consumable by humans with causing illness or disease. Drinking water must be potable, that is, it must be clean, or drinkable. All life forms on earth require drinking water. Humans, in particular, require at least 64 fluid ounces, or 8 cups, of drinking water each day for optimal health.
Your drinking water, in the United States, may come from one of several sources.
A Public Drinking Water System
The term "public water system" usually refers to any water system that has 15 or more hook-ups, or serves 25 or more people. Water systems that serve less than this are considered private water systems. Public water systems may be run by cities or towns, by state or federal agencies, by other political subdivisions like water districts and co-ops, or by private, for-profit companies. Regardless of who owns and runs the public drinking water system, that system must comply with all requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.
A Private Drinking Water System?
The term "private water system" usually refers to any water system that serves between 1 and 14 service connections. A private drinking water system is not regulated by the government. However, owners of private wells and these non-regulated systems often have resources available to them.
What Is Done to Keep Our Water Clean?
Government laws are designed to keep our water clean. But do they work?
According to a national inventory by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), rivers and streams with water quality rated "good" fell from 65 percent in 1998 to 61 percent in 2000. Estuaries with water quality rated "good" fell from 56 percent to 49 percent over the same two-year period.
In a report, the EPA explained: "Wastewater treatment efficiencies may be leveling off, which, when combined with population and economic growth, could have the effect of reversing hard-won water quality gains. By 2016, pollution levels could be similar to levels observed in the mid-1970s."
What Is Done to Keep Our Drinking Water Clean?
Such reports are not concerned with the drinking water that comes out of the tap in your kitchen or bathroom. Is our drinking water clean?
We should not take for granted tap water purity. A study of drinking water systems of 19 U.S. cities found that many cities rely on drinking water delivery systems and treatments that date back to before World War I. Those aging pipes will break sometime. When they do, they might leach contaminants into the drinking water they carry. Those old-fashioned water treatment plants were built to filter out particles in the water, and to kill some of the parasites and bacteria, but many fail to remove modern contaminants.
More positively, many U.S. cities have updated their systems. They provide good drinking water because they:
* Guard the sources of their water (lakes, streams, reservoirs, and wells) against pollution
* Provide good quality pipes, and keep them maintained at all times
* Have modern treatment facilities that are large enough and high-tech enough to keep our drinking water clean.
The Safe Drinking Water Act, a national law safeguarding tap water in the U.S., oversees local government provisions for your drinking water.
Bottled Drinking Water
If you are concerned about your drinking water, you may decide to purchase bottled water. U.S. citizens spend billions of dollars each year on bottled drinking water. Some use it in place of other beverages. Others use bottled drinking water because they like its taste or think it is safer than tap water.
Bottled drinking water comes from sources similar to those of tap water. It comes from rivers and lakes, or from underground aquifers. Bottled drinking water's taste and quality varies among brands. It can even vary within the same brand, depending on the source of a particular bottle. Even bottled drinking water may contain at least small amounts of contaminants. It may meet USFDA standards, but those standards do not demand total purity.
Purified Drinking Water
Finally, you may choose to purify your water through one of many available filtering systems. Purification systems may be as simple as a pitcher that is filled with water, and dispenses it through a filter. You may attach a filter to the faucet in your kitchen, or to the water line beneath the kitchen sink. You might get your purified drinking water from a carbon filtration system, or you might invest in a reverse osmosis system.
Purified drinking water is more costly, per gallon, than tap water, but it may provide the peace of mind and/or the health you want.

Once the diet conditions were relaxed, the glass of water habit seemed to be so popular that it was continued. This resulted in further modest weight loss over the course of the year. The other group who returned to normal put their weight back on.

Having the enough water every day can have a significant impact on how effective our weight loss program is.
Many people believe that you do not get dehydrated if you are not thirsty. But the reality is that your thirst mechanism does not actually kick in until you are already mildly dehydrated.
In addition to this is the problem of modern society using things that wet our mouth without hydrating us and over time this has lead to a condition for many people were we do not actually recognize thirst even when we are dehydrating.
Very often when we think we need fluids we have a coffee, or a soft drink. The problem with this is that we experience wetness from the fluid in our mouths but the fluid we are taking does not hydrate us. Coffee is a diuretic so drinking coffee actually pulls fluids out of our body rather than adding them. Soft drinks create the same problem.
This leads to a situation for many people in modern society were many people do not experience dehydration as becoming thirst but mistake it as hunger. Instead of having a large glass of water we look for a snack and have something to eat.
The difference between a large glass of water with no calories and a snack that might give us 300, 400, 500 calories is quite dramatic. 500 calories a day of additional snack food is around 3,500 calories a week or a potential weight gain of a pound. In metric we are talking around 7,000 calories a fortnight which is about the number of calories in a kilo of additional weight.
Pretty dramatic don't you think?
For these reasons, it is important that we pay attention to our water intake and give our bodies the fluids it needs in enough quantity, and in a way that it can use them, preferably good, clean, water.
This is a problem is in the summer when it is hot and we need to replace the water we lose from the heat but it is an even bigger problem in the winter when we are often in air-conditioned, heated, offices and houses. The air-conditioning removes water from the air and the dry air pulls water out of us. Since it is cold outside though we often do not drink as much water, and do not pay attention to what we drink. For this reason the problem of dehydration can be worse in the winter than it is in the summer. We need to pay attention to this.
How can we tell if we are dehydrated?
Monitoring the color of your urine may be the best indicator. Urine should be clear to pale yellow. This indicates adequate hydration. Dark yellow to gold urine, especially if it is cloudy indicates you need to drink more water.
Taking a multivitamin may tint the color of your urine if you are using supplements that your body is not properly absorbing so you need to make allowances for that if you are like the majority on people nowadays and taking supplements.
Another method for monitoring hydration is to keep track of how often you visit the bathroom. Urinating at least every 2 hours is also a good sign that you are drinking enough water.
So if you are trying to lose weight, or just to be healthy, then take another look at how much water you are drinking and make sure that you are giving your body enough water so that it can work with you towards being fit and well.

Water - How It Affects Weight-Loss and Metabolism


It seems as if there's always been a frenzied discussion amongst the fitness community over water consumption and the role it plays with metabolism and weight-loss. Personally, I think the discussion about water consumption and the role it plays in weight-loss has become way too complicated and the "experts" have only found more and more superfluous ways of saying the same thing.
I'm going to explain the role water plays in helping along the process of weight-loss in the simplest of terms.
Before I begin, it is important to understand that weight-loss can be achieved by implementing one or a combination of the following:
1. By reducing the amount of calories ingested - The basic concept is that if you are accustomed to eating a certain amount of calories per day to maintain your current weight then a reduction in calories will result in weight-loss.
2. By increasing physical activity - Again if you are accustomed to eating a certain amount of calories per day to maintain a certain weight, any sustained increase in physical activity will result in weight-loss.
As you can see, the common denominator here is calories and what's the good news? The way you'll use water to help you lose weight addresses both modes of weight-loss.
Water and Portion Control - Portion control is a huge part of managing your calorie intake on the path to weight-loss (I know it is for me). I typically take in approximately 400 to 500 calories per meal and I eat six times a day (your needs will not be the same as mine) and attempt as best as possible to keep the calories even.
I find that drinking a half liter of water with every meal helps me feel fuller and keeps me feeling that way for longer. I am not the only one who gets these benefits from drinking more water. Water contains no calories so it's a sweeter deal than going back for seconds at dinner or lunch time and blowing my calorie budget by miles.
Drinking a cold glass of water often buys me a half hour to an hour when hunger hits between meals.
Water and Metabolism- Increasing physical activity in combination with the right diet will increase your metabolism and hence your body's ability to burn more fat. By drinking more water you'll flush your system of toxins and all the excess water your body has been holding on to as a result of not being adequately hydrated. Yes, you read correctly! Drinking more water will make your body lose water.
People are always amazed at the fact that they lose a lot of weight during the first week of a new diet plan (good diet plan, not some crazy excuse for a diet plan), especially if they have been inactive and careless with what they've been consuming for a while. A high percentage of that initial weight-loss is due to water loss from the body as it realizes you've decided to be kind and replenish it more generously. Your generosity tells your body it doesn't need to hold on to that "old" water anymore because the drought has lifted... so to speak.
The liver, which plays a huge role in the way fats and cholesterol a metabolized by the body, also functions better in the presence of an adequate supply of water.
Consider the relationship between gasoline and oil in a car. A similar relationship exists between food and water in the human body. A car can be filled with gas but without enough oil it's not going to get to too many places before long. The better the fuel and the fresher the oil, the more efficient the car will be. Same goes for you!
How Much Water Should You Drink?
This is as simple as it gets. Drink two glasses of water with each meal. You can drink one glass before and one after you finished eating. I like to have a glass of water about five minutes before I start eating and then another while I'm eating. If you can do this with every meal, at six meals a day (including snacks) you're already on the right track. In addition to that, remember you can also have water between meals to help hold off hunger.
If you work out regularly, high intensity cardiovascular training, for example, will dehydrate you very quickly over a short time. You water intake budget should be adjusted accordingly.
Can't Stand the Taste of Water?
For those of you saying "yuck!" already, try a few of these tricks to help you along the path to increased water intake:
  • Drink it cold
  • Add lemon or lime juice (just to give it a hint of flavor)
  • Add 0 or low-calorie flavored drink mixes

How Much Water Should I Drink For Fitness and Weight Loss?


Nobody argues that water is great for you, but there a lot of confusion concerning how much water to drink daily.

I recommend drinking one pint of water two hours before exercise.  It is more beneficial to drink moderately and frequently throughout the day than to drink a large amount immediately before exercise.  Drinking too much water prior to intense activity can cause stomach discomfort.
Although, gulping down a few "chugs" of cold water has been shown to increase the rate water absorption, just don't overdue it!
Contrary to popular belief, the feeling of thirst is not a good indication of hydration level and your need for water.  By the time you feel thirsty, you are already somewhat dehydrated.
The easiest way to monitor your hydration is the color of your urine.  If you're hydrated, your urine should be light yellow like lemonade.  If your dehydrated, you urine will be darker, which means your kidneys are working over-time to flush wastes from your system.
I recommend drinking clean, mineral rich water rather than distilled water.  Distilled water, although beneficial on the short term for cleansing purposes, often lacks nutrients due to the distilling process.  Nutrients are essential for proper functioning of the body's systems and a lack of nutrients can lead to big problems.  You can attain many minerals from food, however, adequate hydration is needed for your body to metabolize and absorb food nutrients.

Anybody who has ever read any of my articles on health and weight loss knows that my number one recommendation is to get more exercise and try to eat healthy.
Many people already know that eating healthy includes drinking enough water. Most people also understand and would probably agree that they probably don't drink enough water.
What most people don't know is that drinking enough water, staying hydrated, can be an important part of a weight loss program in several ways.
First of all, water helps with almost all the activities of the body at a cellular level including the distribution of nutrients and elimination of waste. Even if we simply accept that if we are healthier we are more likely to do things relative to weight loss, increasing our water consumption is already one step in our favor.
Another factor is that when thirsty, our bodies can send signals that are misinterpreted as hunger. Many a midnight refrigerator raider is actually in need of a glass of water when they eat what's left of the apple pie. Not only are they consuming extra calories and depriving their bodies of the water necessary for health, but they are perpetuating a condition of chronic dehydration.
In fact, one estimate I read stated that as many as 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated and dehydration can SLOW DOWN METABOLISM!
If you add these small items to the facts that remaining properly hydrated can improve mental acuity, lubricate joints, thus easing back and joint pain, and is believed to decrease the risk of certain cancers, you can see why drinking enough water is important.
However, how much water IS enough?
Obviously, the actual amount may vary from individual to individual, and you may already be getting a fair share of the total amount you need. Also, such things as activity, climate, and altitude may effect your individual need, Here are a few guidelines:
1. Divide your body weight by two and drink that many ounces per day.
2. When you exercise, or if you live in an arid area, try to get an extra amount each day. Add a pint for dry climates, and eight ounces for each 20 minutes of exercise.
3. Coffee, tea, and sodas actually are diuretics and will contribute to dehydration. If you must drink them, drink an equal amount of water.
4. Do not try to substitute juices for water. While there is nothing basically wrong with juice, and it is in fact normally a healthy drink, it also contains calories. Water doesn't.
5. Unless you are engaged in really intense exercise, stick with water. Sports drinks also contain calories and unless you are a professional athlete or are training for a marathon you will probably not need to replace the electrolytes by means of a calorie and carbohydrate loaded drink. Water will do just fine.
As good and important as water is, as necessary to health as it is, as much as it can help with your weight loss program, it is still only a helper in that aspect. The key ingredients needed to lose weight and increase your metabolic rate will still be exercise and eating healthy.
