Drinking plenty of water daily is the first important step to take if you are serious about weight loss.
There is a point of view that the water you drink should be ice cold. In this case the body will need to do an extra work to bring the body's temperature back to normal. This process is called thermogenesis. During this process body generates extra heat or energy; this causes the metabolic rate to go up which means burning extra fat.
This might work for some in the short run but in the long run the cold water will weaken the digestive process and make the weight loss more difficult.
Some people already have a weakened digestive system so drinking cold water will make things even worse.

In Ayurveda metabolism is compared to fire. The more "fire" you have the better your digestion will be. The surefire way to extinguish the digestive fire is cold water.
Besides slowing down the digestion, cold water creates a stress for the body that results in all sorts of health problems. It can create stomach problems, spleen problems, problems with vocal cords and many others.
From the point of view of Chinese medicine ice cold water will decrease the Yang qi (energy) of the body. The Yang qi stimulates the digestion and metabolism. So Chinese medicine advocates the same concept - drinking cold water will decrease your metabolic rate.
Even if cold water helps you lose few pounds in the beginning, you will not lose more weight afterwards and will develop all sorts of different health problems.
The healthier way to lose weight is to drink water at a room temperature, herbal teas or hot water with lemon or spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger. Moderately hot beverages are not detrimental for the health; they improve digestion and help lose weight. Make sure you don't go into another extreme and drink very hot beverages - very hot is as detrimental to the body as the ice cold is.
Whatever you do to lose weight, think first about its long-term implications on your health. If you lose your health in the process of doing something - anything for this matter, undertaking it is not worth the effort.
