Get Rid of Bunny Lines with Botox

By Anne Hastings Fennell

Bunny lines refer to the creases that form on the sides of the upper nose and across the bridge of the nose when you wrinkle up your nose, much like the way a bunny's nose twitches. Hence, the name bunny lines. The muscle responsible for this action is called the nasalis muscle. The nasalis muscle that stretches across the bridge of the nose. It's the muscle that allows you to flare your nostrils. When squinting, frowning or laughing, people tend to use this muscle involuntarily.

Lines and wrinkles can remain even when the muscle is not being used. Just like other areas of the face, repetition can play a defining factor in this development of deep lines and wrinkles. Of course, age can deepen these lines and wrinkles. These bunny lines can extend down the sides of the nose into the tear trough area. If people overuse the nasalis muscle, as can occur when their frown area between their eyebrows is treated, they can actually make the bunny lines worse.

Fortunately, Botox has been successfully treating bunny lines for years. The dosing depends upon each individual's unique anatomy, but is usually as low as five to ten units. The injection is made into the body of the nasalis muscle on either side of the nasal bridge. Most patients indicate that the injection is completely painless. The needle used for Botox injections is very fine and some patients aren't even aware that they have received an injection. Despite its small size, the nasalis is a pretty strong muscle; after the initial injection is given, a few more units are sometimes required. Wait a couple of weeks after the first treatment to have the best overall effect. When the nasalis muscle is finally relaxed, after the Botox takes effect, the lines across the nose and down the sides of the nose are smoothed out. This can augment the frown treatment and create a more youthful, relaxed look.

Botox can successfully reduce bunny lines, giving patients a smooth nasal bridge and taking years off of their appearance.

The Botox Units

Botox comes in a multi-dose vial. Typically they come in standard units of one hundred. The Botox protein sticks to the walls of the glass vial in which it comes. In order to be injected into muscles, the freeze-dried protein must be reconstituted. What this means is that sterile saline must be injected into the vial to dissolve the protein into a liquid solution so that it can be injected.
